Monday Motivation: Focus on What You DO Have

In life we usually tend to focus on what is missing in our lives. Perhaps we are not making as much money as we would like to be making or do not yet have the job that we would like to have. Perhaps we feel that we are not yet fulfilling our purpose or have not yet reached our academic or career goals. Or, perhaps, we are not in the relationship we would like to be in.

This might be a good place to start when setting your life, career, or relationship goals, but staying focused on what you do not have while you are working toward accomplishing your goals, might actually distract, frustrate, and create more stress for you. These distractions and feelings of frustration and stress are more likely to keep you from getting where you want to be.

Instead, focusing on and feeling grateful for all that you already DO have, is more likely to help you reach your stated goals.

Focusing on what you do already have in your life brings you into a present, happier, and more positive frame of mind.  It is this recipe of presence, happiness, and positivism that sets the right foundation for you being successful in reaching your goals.

To clarify the above suggestion, here is the following distinction:

When setting a goal for yourself –> Think about what you do not yet have, and want in your life.

When working toward accomplishing those goals –> Focus on all that you already DO have, so that you can be in the right frame of mind to accomplish your stated goals.

I am my own first client, and have first hand experience of focusing on all that I do not yet have, but want, while I am working toward accomplishing my goals. When I stay focused on what I still do not have, I feel frustrated and unappreciative of all that I have already accomplished and all that I am currently doing. This attitude and approach affects my work and distracts me from being and doing my best. If I continue focusing on the negative, I will continue not doing my best, which will actually keep me from ever reaching my goals of success.

Instead when I focus on all that I do have, all that I have already accomplished, and all the great things that I feel honored and privileged to be doing right now, I feel happy and positive and realize that I am much closer to my goals than I thought I was. This attitude and approach allows me to be in the present and be and do my best, and continue to guide me on the path of success.

Here is a suggestion for the both of us this week:

Everyday for the next week, let’s make the time to reflect and recognize what we already DO have in our lives that we are grateful for. Let’s do this twice each day, once in the morning and then again in the evening before heading to bed. I believe that the impact will be a positive one and will bring us much closer to our goals.

As always, please be in touch with any questions or comments anytime.

In support and in awe of all that we are,

Jenny
