Finding Your Voice in a Noisy World: How to Block Out All the Outside Noise, Hear Your Own Voice, and Make the Right Decisions for You

finding your voice in a noisy world

On any given day we can be bombarded with tons of messages and advice from the outside that tell us what to think, feel, and do. These messages can be coming from the media, strangers, professionals, and also people we are closest to.

The impact these outside messages can have

When we are receiving so many messages from the outside, our own voice can easily get drowned out. These outside messages can leave us feeling distracted, unsure, off-balance, anxious, not in control, and confused. It can lead to it being hard to make decisions and to trust and feel confident in ourselves.

What can help us filter out the outside ‘noise’

In order to be in the best position we can possibly be in to filter out the outside noise and engage in a healthy and confident way with all of the outside messages that do come our way, we are required to really know and understand ourselves and our nature and fully embrace, honor, respect and appreciate who we are.

This is why a key pillar of my coaching programs and courses is to help you get to know, understand, respect, and appreciate who you are. Getting to this place brings you to feel confident in yourself and your decisions – about your career, business, leadership, or personal life – and effectively navigate the outside information that comes your way. A key principle about communication that can also help

One key principle of communication that will also help you filter out the information that does come your way is to understand that everyone is operating from their own perspective.

When other people are giving us advice it is often advice based on what has worked for them in the past or what they think is right and good.

This all might be great advice, but if you don’t take the time to get to know yourself and what’s right and best for you, you very likely won’t feel certain about this advice even if/when you do decide to incorporate it into your life.

A personal story

When I was shopping for make-up the other day the woman in the store was strongly trying to persuade me to buy a specific brand and palette of eye shadow that she thought was best for me. She was feeling very confident that I would love her suggestion. Fortunately for me, I knew better about what I wanted, what was best for me, and exactly what I was looking for. She kept pushing and even criticized the item that I picked up for myself! But I pushed back because I knew what I wanted and what was best for me.

This situation might seem trite, but I am sharing it to illustrate that confusion and self-doubt can creep in to our everyday, and even mundane, experiences if we are not careful and/or don’t feel confident in ourselves. How much more so when it comes to the larger life, personal or professional, decisions we are making?

How well do you feel you know yourself?

How well do you understand your personal qualities and strengths?

How well do you know what your values and beliefs are?

How well do you know what your needs are and what you want?

How does knowing, or not knowing, these things about yourself impact your decision-making in either, or both, your professional or personal life?

If any of the above are still question marks for you, dedicate time to explore these questions either on your own, with a trusted friend, or with a professional that you feel comfortable with.

Once you have your information and feel that you have a good understanding of who you are, be sure to take time every day to connect with yourself so that you feel grounded and sure of who you are and make decisions throughout your day, and your professional and personal life, that are best and right for you.
