Love Tip Tuesday: Be Authentic

Love Tip TuesdaysAccording to a recent article in Psychology Today, genuine people have more appealing traits, are perceived as being interesting and unique individuals, are more likely to be trusted, are not judgmental, and have a high self-esteem. According to this description, who wouldn’t want to date someone who is authentic?

And yet, although, we may be attracted to the confidence, uniqueness, and strength of character that usually is ascribed to those who are authentic, we may find it difficult to be authentic, especially when dating. We might be afraid of showing our true colors for fear that another might reject us. We choose the path of hiding our true selves or being someone we are not in an effort to protect ourselves from that rejection or to get that guy or girl we’ve been crushing on to like us.

But where does this approach really get us? Most likely to failed experiences with dating and relationships.

You will have more success in dating and relationships when you are being your authentic self.  Here are a few reasons why.

  • When you are authentic, you are sending a clear message to those around you about who you are. When you are being you with confidence, people get to know the real you. If people don’t like it, that gives you good information: this person is not the right one for you. I recommend pursuing relationships with those who appreciate who you are.

  • When you are being true to who you are, what you value and what is important to you, you are more likely to seek out those people who share your values, interests, and general approach to life. When you surround yourself with like-minded and like-value people, you have a better chance of meeting, dating, and building a successful relationship with that right someone.

  • When you are authentic and secure in who we are, you will be more open and accepting of others for who they are, as well. Healthy and successful relationships are built on this mutual respect for who each person is.
