Why You Need to Know What Your Needs Are

Two weeks ago my husband and I started to ask each other this question: “How can I make your day better?”

We learned this great tip it from an article my husband came across about a couple who transformed their relationship by asking each other this one question every single day.

When I asked my husband this question, he replied “I don’t know.”

(Not to worry. He figured it out a few minutes later and let me know.)

That made me wonder, however: What good are these relationship building questions and tools if we don’t know what it is that we want and need?

Don’t get me wrong, I believe relationship and communication skills are essential for our success in both love and in work. I teach these essential communication skills to individuals, groups, managers, and teams.

What I always include, however, and what I feel is so essential to our success in life, love and work, is an understanding and awareness of our own needs, and the needs of others we work and enjoy our life with.

To sum up, In your efforts to build great relationships and great working environments, get to know your needs and pay attention to the needs of others.

Here are some resources to help you start building your awareness of your needs and the needs of those around you:

  • The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
  • Choice Theory by Dr. William Glasser – the section on 5 psychological needs, in particular.
  • The Wisdom of the Enneagram by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson
  • It’s Just My Nature by Carol Tuttle

These are the resources I use to help my clients discover their needs. I suggest you start exploring these resources to start discovering yours.

I am always here to help. Please do reach out if you have any questions or would like some more guidance and support in this area.

In support and admiration,
